LuxorHow I Got ThereTravelled on the 06:00 first class train from Aswan, which cost E£18 and took about 4 hours. Be ready for the touts at the train station in Luxor, don't even mention where you are staying and don't let them get in the taxi with you. In my case they overheard me saying to a friend where I was staying then followed me, hopped in the front seat of the taxi. Taxi driver said nothing, eventually got him to get out. Where I stayedHappy Land Hotel, Sharia Qamr, happylandluxor@hotmail.com Tel. (095) 371 828 Price E£35 for a single room ensuite. Includes breakfast with cornflakes, milk, rolls and tea. I found it a bit tricky finding the hotel the first few times i returned there. Getting AroundHappy Land organise tours to the West Bank for E£40. Unfortunately the day I was there they didn't have enough people so me and english guy I met paid E£40 each just for the taxi but it was a good day. If you wait outside the train station and shout at passing microbuses you'll find one to take you to Karnak (only 25pt). To get back to town wait where you were dropped off and you'll get one back too, even late at night after the Karnak sound and light show. From the entrance to the Valley of the Kings a little "disney-like" train takes you up to the main tomb area for E£1. Somewhere to eatThere is a nice English run restaurant at the side of the Luxor temple called Jamboree Restaurant, Sharia al-Montazah. They have a nice "safe" salad bar too. McDonalds is also available located at the back of the Luxor temple and guarded by two armed guards. There is an Irish bar, Murphys, and an English bar, Kings Head, in town too where you can have a meal and a drink. Other InformationA student ticket in the Valley of the Kings costs E£15 and alows you to visit 3 tombs not including Tutankhamuns. If you wish to visit this tomb then get your ticket at the main gate as once inside you can't get the ticket unless you want to go all the way back down to the main gate!! I thought Tuthmosis III tomb was best. Student Entry Prices Luxor Temple - E£10 Hatshepsuts Temple - E£6 Karnak Temple - E£10 Karnak Sound and Light - E£20 (i think) Valley of the Queens - E£6 |
