The PyramidsHow I Got ThereGiza: I followed Lets Go advise on getting to the Pyramids via the combination of the metro and microbus but this far from being an easy way to the pyramids. I ended up getting out at the wrong metro station because they said get out at Giza Sqaure. I then wandered until I found Giza Square, then had no idea what microbus to get!! Eventually found the right one with the help of a friendly local. Then off we went in the microbus. It was fun and a good adventure but for less hassle take one of the direct buses to from Midan Tahrir. Getting back from the pyramids I walked into the town where I was talking to a local man, next thing I hoped on a local bus which was absolutely jam-packed so I hung on for the journey into town. this cost 25 piastres!!. You just don't get tourists getting these busses so its fun to see how the locals travel. Saqqara/Dahshur/Abu Sir/Memphis: Hotels will organise taxis to take you to these sites. I asked at the New Sun where I was staying. They told me they had no one else interested in going the next day and that it would cost E£100 to go on my own. I then went up to the Magic Hotel, they were very helpful and told me I could go the next day for £E40. I got there early in the morning and met with 2 South Africans and a Scottish guy and we had a great day. At the end of the day we went back to Giza and saw a spectacular air display by the Red Arrows over the pyramids as we sat on camels amazed, fantastic. Getting AroundAt Giza you get dropped at the entrance close to the Great Pyramid, you then walk through the site exploring the pyramids and then head down the hill to the Sphinx which is near the exit. It is difficult to get into the Great Pyramid. They sell 150 tickets at 8am and 1pm. My advise is to get there after 12 and get your tickets for the pyramid, its very difficult to get them in the morning. Tickets for the third pyramid are available all day so if your not intent on getting into the Great Pyramid you are probably better off to go in the morning or the evening when its not as hot and the sun is not too intense for your pictures. Dahshur is well worth the visit and the crowds/touts are not anything like Giza. You can go into the Red Pyramid which is the second largest pyramid in Egypt. Th Bent pyramid is very interesting too. Somewhere to eatWe just got the driver to stop at a hop where we bought bread, drinks etc. Other InformationStudent Rates Giza - E£10 Entry into 3rd Pyramid - E£5 Dahshur - E£5 Saqqara - E£10 Step Pyramid - E£7 |
